Pro 18:19 A brother transgressed against is a strong city, And contentions are like the bars of a citadel.
Pro 18:20 A man’s stomach is satisfied From the fruit of his mouth; He is satisfied with the increase of his lips.
Pro 18:21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those loving it eat its fruit.
Jas 3:2 For we all stumble in many matters. If anyone does not stumble in word, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle the entire body.
Jas 3:3 Look, we put bits in the mouths of horses, for them to obey us, and we turn their body.
Jas 3:4 Look at the ships too: although they are so big and are driven by strong winds, they are turned by a very small rudder wherever the pilot intends.
Jas 3:5 So too the tongue is a little member, yet boasts greatly. See how a little fire kindles a great forest!
Jas 3:6 And the tongue is a fire, the world of unrighteousness. Among our members the tongue is set, the one defiling the entire body, and setting on fire the wheel of life, and it is set on fire by Gehenna.
Jas 3:7 For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and creature of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by mankind.
Jas 3:8 But no man is able to tame the tongue. It is unruly, evil, filled with deadly poison.
Jas 3:9 With it we bless our Elohim and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of Elohim.
Jas 3:10 Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brothers, this should not be so.
Mat 15:10 And calling the crowd near, He said to them, “Hear and understand:
Mat 15:11 “Not that which goes into the mouth defiles the man, but that which comes out of the mouth, this defiles the man.”
Psa 34:11 Come, you children, listen to me; Let me teach you the fear of יהוה.
Psa 34:12 Who is the man who desires life, Who loves many days, in order to see good?
Psa 34:13 Keep your tongue from evil, And your lips from speaking deceit.
Psa 34:14 Turn away from evil and do good; Seek peace, and pursue it.
1Pe 3:8 To sum up, let all of you be like-minded, sympathetic, loving as brothers, tenderhearted, humble-minded,
1Pe 3:9 not returning evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary blessing, knowing that you were called to this, in order to inherit a blessing.
1Pe 3:10 For “He who wishes to love life and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil, and his lips from speaking deceit,
1Pe 3:11 let him turn away from evil and do good, let him seek peace and pursue it.
Luk 6:41 “And why do you see the splinter in your brother’s eye, but are not aware of the plank in your own eye?
Luk 6:42 “Or how are you able to say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take out the splinter that is in your eye,’ not seeing the plank in your own eye? Hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you shall see clearly to take out the splinter that is in your brother’s eye.
Luk 6:43 “For a good tree does not yield rotten fruit, nor does a rotten tree yield good fruit.
Luk 6:44 “For each tree is known by its own fruit. For they do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they gather grapes from a bramble bush.
Luk 6:45 “The good man brings forth what is good out of the good treasure of his heart, and the wicked man brings forth what is wicked out of the wicked treasure of his heart. For out of the overflow of the heart his mouth (his tongue) speaks.
A. Lashon Hara = literally the "evil tongue" refers to true statements that harm, embarass, cause financial damage to, or lower the status of the person being discussed. It is also the practice of telling negative truths about others that are unnecessary and damaging.
Lashon hara is as the sin of murder, too - it murders the one we speak of, the one doing the speaking and the one listening to what we speak...
B. Rechilut = occurs when we pass on to someone hurtful things another has said about them.
C. Motzei Shem Ra (slander) = this occurs when we make up lies about others in order to defame them. It's referred to as "putting out a bad name on another" -
Luk 6:22 “Blessed are you when men shall hate you, and when they shall cut you off, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as wicked, for the sake of the Son of Aḏam.
A person who smears one person will usually always smear others...the old adage - if you want to know how your"friend" talks about you, observe and listen to how they talk to you about another...
D. Avak Lashon Hara - The dust of Lashon Hara = the act of committing a sin of speech without saying a word... a look of sarcasm, a roll of the eyes, a smirk on the face, an insincere, knowing smile, an eyebrow raised in disdain, a lip curled - all relate an ill opinion of someone without uttering a word...
(IN JEWISH THOUGHT, WE'RE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF OUR COMMUNITY, NOT JUST OURSELVES. WE SHOULD GUARD NOT JUST OUR OWN WORDS, BUT EVEN THE WORDS THAT WE CAUSE OTHERS TO SPEAK!!!)
E. Halbanat Panim - whitening the face = this occurs when we humiliate, insult, correct, ask someone a guestion we know they can't answer - in front of others...
F. Geneivat Da'at - Stealing knowledge = this is another way of sinning through lips without ever uttering a single untrue word...being taken in by a deception; being mislead or duped into believing something not true; feeling robbed by another; fooling people into having mistaken assumptions, beliefs or impressions about something...
THE TALMUD SAYS ONE CAN MASS A LARGE AMOUNT OF MERITS FROM TORAH STUDY AND GOOD DEEDS, BUT WILL BE LEFT EMPTY-HANDED ON THE DAY OF RECKONING IF HE HABITUALLY SLANDERS AND SPEAKS ILL OF OTHERS...IT ALSO CITES - THE REGULAR SPEAKING OF LASHON HARA MAKES A PERSON UNWORTHY OF REWARD IN THE WORLD TO COME...
Deu 27:24 " 'A curse on anyone who secretly attacks (LASHON HARA) a fellow member of the community.' All the people are to say, 'Amen!'
Psa 101:5 If someone slanders (LASHON HARA) another in secret, I will cut him off. Haughty eyes and proud hearts I cannot abide.
